Call the locksmith

September 1, 2008

So as some of you may know, I am currently homeless, but this lovely Australian girl took me into her apartment and set me up a bed on the floor until Oly (this other homeless girl) and I could find a place to live.  Today Oly and I went house hunting and we might have found a place!!!!  Until we move in though Im going to move out of Steph’s apartment (not suited for two people for a long time) and into Sam’s house, which is a collective full of lovely Danish people (sounds delicious). The place we found is this old silo they turned into apartments.  I sense a trip to IKEA is in order.

When I came back to Steph’s apartment today we decided we were going to go to the Netto (a grocery store) and as we walked out of the place, Steph realized she had locked her keys inside.  For some reason the building manager refused to come out and let her in until 7am the next morning,  so we had to call a locksmith which was way more expensive.

To make up for it though, Sanne cooked us dinner.

On the left you can see the basil plant I bought Steph because I felt bad she had to pay a ton of money to get back into her apartment.

Evidently Roskilde University Center never has classes because it seems as though no one is ever there and since my classes are all cancelled until Thursday, were planning on going to a castle of some sort.  I dont really know which one just yet, and before you get on me about being an idiot, there are thousands here, Im in viking territory!  Also, were going sailing on Sunday with some vikings…not really, theyre just sailors, but I like to call them vikings.

We also decided we were going to have a movie night this week sometime and Sanne has never seen any David Lynch movies and was intrigued so I think were going to have a marathon that really isn’t quite a marathon, just Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive.  We also decided to throw some of the Shining action into there.

Mom wanted a picture of me and it just so happens that Sanne took one of the two of us:

I am the one on the right

Also, in case you forgot what they looked like, here is a picture of my feet:

In recaping my first week here in Delightful Denmark I have learned three things so far:

1. Danish is a language that can be well understood when read, but when heard, it sounds like the Swedish Chef from the muppets.

2. There are some very bizarre fads here, such as tucking baggy pants into white tube socks, and no, its not because they ride their bikes, its because they think it just looks cool.  I have news for them, it doesn’t.

3. There are three options Danish women have:

  • You can have a child
  • You can have a dog
  • You can be pregnant

I’m not kidding, every woman here falls into one of the above three categories.  Its quite unfortunate for me as a lot of you know I dont like children.

As you can see in the above picture, Steph drank a lot of wine tonight and passed out early, so rather than wake her up with this incesant clicking of the keys, I’ll call it a night and go to bed.  Goodnight and good luck.

Laundromatte

August 31, 2008

Today Sam and Steph and I went to Copenhagen again to go to this laundromatte cafe:

As you can see, they color coded all of their books which I think is one of the coolest things and just might possibly do that to my book collection when I get home.  This cafe was a really good idea.  Its a laundromat, but its also a cafe.  I think it can barely constitute as a laundromat though because there is only one washing machine and only one dryer.

On the way to the cafe’, about a block away, we were walking in front of a kiosk and this man looked straight at me and said, you’re a long way from home, which I thought was weird and rude considering I wasn’t bothering him at all, but I can’t do anything about it so oh well.

The guy on the left is not amused about the bus shortage

On the way back we were trying to take the bus, but it turns out there was a motorcycle rally of some sort and it had completely blocked off all traffic so the buses on that route weren’t running.

The guy on the left is not amused about the whole no bus thing.

Conveniently though, we happened to be next to a cemetary and not just any cemetary, but the cemetary where Hans Christin Andersen was buried, so of course we had to walk through it and go see his grave.

Someone had thrown coffee on it because there was a dark stain.

We also saw this teenager peeing on a tree in the cemetary.  That was really disgusting, but he just looked at us as we passed so he obviously did not care.

The only complaint I have about Denmark is that it will be a beautiful gorgeous nice sunny day and then as soon as it gets dark, WOW, its freezing.  You don’t think to take a jacket with you in the beginning of the day because its so nice outside, so you better be home before it gets dark or else you are going to be miserable.  Steph and I learned this hard lesson when we were waiting for the bus tonight in Roskilde.  We were both unhappy.

First week in Denmark

August 31, 2008

Hey all!!!  I started a blog so I wouldnt have to send individual emails and so everyone could see all my pictures.  Ive been going back and forth between Roskilde and Copenhagen.  Both are incredibly awesome cities.

I don't know what this is

I dont know what this is

The first couple of days I was here it was ridiculously rainy all the time, I felt like a cloud was following me around Denmark, but then a couple of days ago the clouds cleared up and the sun came out so I havent even really needed a jacket.  Everyone here is so nice and Ive met a lot of great people.  Below is a picture of all the lovely ladies:

I dont have class again until next Thursday so were going to Copenhagen to this cheap restaurant/laundromatte and Im planning on taking lots of 35mm pictures.  I also need to get a new school bag to hold all my school stuff.  Also, the school Im going to is probably the most THE MOST unorganized school I have ever encountered in my entire life.  I went down there on friday and it was awful.  Every person I talked to sent me to another person to talk to and so on and so on.  Finally after running around for about 2 hours I finally figured out who to talk to and she plopped me down right in the middle of class and Im about 1 out 3 people who’s first language is English.

Well Im about to run off to Copenhagen, au revoir ya’ll.
